Bungmati Khokana Hiking a small typical Newari village

A village with a difference Bungamati, a small typical Newari village which is situated about 12 kilometer south from the heart of Kathmandu city. The ancient village came into existence as early in the 7th century but developed in 16th century. This village has many more master wood carver and sculpture producers. It used to be an autonomous province in Kathmandu valley. Regardless of the rapid changes in lifestyle of the urban population and the globalized way of living, this villagers have remained untouched by modern waves. They are living their life “simply is the best” rural ways from the past several centuries. This village has Rato Machhendranath and Karya Binayak temple, regarded as the patron of the valley. Therefore, this village is known as “a village with a difference”.

Khokana, a small traditional and tiny Newari village having 750 houses with population 7000 is situated about 10 kilometers south of Kathmandu city ( on the outskirts of Patan city ) dating from the 15th century. This village has surrounded by terraced farms from four sides, It is medieval Newari settlement. It has own history & culture, and has long been known as the centre of Mustard oil processing in the valley in which a heavy wooden beam is used to crush the mustard seeds in order to extract the oil. This oil can be consumed if desired, but it can also be used for therapeutic massage. 10% of population is business & services, rest of the most population major occupation is farming and much of their daily activities take place outside of their dwellings such as women spinning wool, men crushing seeds and other daily activities. The chain of houses build in traditional Nepalese style gives out an aura of age- old tradition that has been kept intact over the decades. The windows are beautified with chillies, onions, vegitables etc. hung for drying in the sun. Temple of Shikali Ajima, is also known as Rudrayani ( the mother goddess ), is located in a wide street. This village has been nominated to be listed as a Unisco world heritage, representing a vernacular village and Its mustard oil seed industarial heritage.
